Documents required for British citizens

  • Valid passports: Both partners need a valid British passport. Additionally, copies are required.
  • Complete birth certificates: Both partners need a full birth certificate (Full Birth Certificate), which also lists the names of the parents.

  • Certificate of No Impediment (CNI): Both partners must each apply for their own proof of the absence of marital impediments at their relevant registry office. The issuance of this document can take several weeks. Since these documents are only valid to a limited extent, the timing of the application is particularly important.

  • In the case of divorced persons: The final divorce judgment (Decree Absolute or Final Order), as well as, if applicable, the marriage certificate from the previous marriage.

  • In case of name changes: Official proof of all name changes, such as through marriage, divorce, or a deed poll. If the birth name was reinstated after a divorce, this must also be proven accordingly.

  • In the case of widowed persons: The marriage certificate from the previous marriage as well as the death certificate of the deceased spouse.

  • In the case of adoption: If applicable, the relevant adoption documents.

  • With different nationalities: If one of the partners does not hold British citizenship, additional documentation may be required. This must be requested from the relevant embassy or consulate.

All necessary British documents must be certified in accordance with the applicable regulations.

The certification is usually done through an Apostille from the British Foreign Office (FCDO).

Subsequently, the documents must be translated from German into Greek by an officially recognized translator.
